PACKAGING: Avenir - Bicycling Helmet

This inset image shows a mock up of the 2nd generation structural design that Marcus conceived. The design was never implemented due to Avenir's withdrawl from the helmet market. This unique structure is based off a Seal End, Straight-Tuck structure design; however the top and bottom are die cut with a thermoformed clear polystyrene insert.

Marcus' original design provided a two-tier benefit to Avenir. The first being that it allowed customers to see the actual helmet graphics and interior padding/straping system without opening the package while still protecting the product. The second benefit provided a savings on long-haul shipping costs and retail shelf real estate by allowing a for a 3:2 stacking ratio.

Avenir, a division of Diamond Back Bicycles manufacturered a large line of cycling aftermarket accessories. The branding look and feel of the Avenir graphic scheme was already established however because there were 3 categories of helmets, a color fade at the bottom of the package consisting of 3 hues of similar value, one hue for each category was added to quickly distinguish between the categories visually. The primary responsibilities Marcus brought to the Avenir product line packaging consisted of engineering unique structual designs to help their product stand out from the competition. This is a standard French-Tuck structural paperboard design.
